What equipment is needed to do a via ferrata?

The Via Ferrata is an adrenaline-pumping activity growing in popularity among outdoor enthusiasts. It is a mountaineering route that combines the safety of a fixed climbing route with the thrill of an exposed and technical hike. It is a series of metal cables, ladders, and metal rungs that are permanently in place and are used to ascend a mountain… Soldiers introduced them during WW1, and nowadays are a great way to get a unique and intense mountaineering experience without being an advanced climber.

The Via Ferrata is not for everyone, as it requires a good fitness level and a head for heights. It is also important to properly prepare and plan for your route, as some Via Ferrata can be pretty challenging. Despite these challenges, the Via Ferrata is an incredibly rewarding and exciting experience for those looking for a thrilling outdoor experience!

Climbers are secured to the cable with a specially designed harness and carabiner, allowing them to safely ascend and traverse the cliff face. Along the way, climbers may have to navigate around sections of exposed rock, narrow crevices, or challenging rock faces.

The necessary equipment includes a climbing harness, a via ferrata lanyard, two carabiners, a helmet, and a pair of gloves:

- A harness is essential for Via Ferrata climbing, designed to keep the climber secure and safe. It should have a secure waist belt, leg loops, and adjustable straps for a comfortable fit. The via ferrata lanyard is the primary piece of safety equipment.

- A via ferrata lanyard attached to the harness is used to clip into the via ferrata cable during the ascent. It should be adjustable and the correct length for the route being climbed.

- Two carabiners are also necessary for the Via Ferrata. They are used to clip in and out of the via ferrata cable and should be robust and of good quality.

- A helmet is also essential for Via Ferrata climbing, as it will protect the climber from rocks and debris that may be present.

- Finally, a pair of gloves is recommended.
