A long glacier traverse, crossing the treacherous "Fortress" to reach the summit of Pizzo Bernina,  the 4000m peak situated on the farthest east of the Alps.

Pizzo Bernina 'Normal Route'

The normal route, passing through the Fortress.

The crossing and the ascent take place in two days of walking. On the first day we leave from Rifugio Diavolezza, easily accessible by lift, we descend to the Vedretta di Pers and cross the Fortezza, a rocky ridge that rises to divide the glacier of Pers from the Vedretta da Morteratsch. We proceed under the flank of Mount Bellavista until we reach the Cresta Guzza saddle and then Rifugio Marco e Rosa, our accommodation for the night. At dawn we begin the climb to the summit of Piz Bernina along the Via Normale.
We then descend from the summit and follow the outward itinerary backwards to return to Rifugio Diavolezza.
