Ferrata Marmolada

West ridge

The Marmolada ferrata, along the West ridge, is a route of great technical and scenic value. A fascinating itinerary that allows you to discover very different terrain: in addition to the via ferrata that runs on the west ridge of the Marmolada, mountaineers will have to cross the Vernel glacier and face the altitude of the Queen of the Dolomites. On the whole, the route is not too demanding but offers satisfaction, emotions and grandiose views.

Much of the difficulty of the Marmolada ferrata depends on the snow and ice conditions: if the along the ridge is not covered by snow and the rock is clean, the via ferrata does not present any particular difficulties. Some challenging points that require attention remain the crossing of the glacier of the Vernel glacier, in ascent and descent also due to the presence of crevasses. The professionalism and competence of an Alpine Guide at your side will guarantee your safety both in crossing the glacier and during the via ferrata section.

Ferrata Marmolada

The Ferrata to Punta Penia itinerary

For this ascent, one normally starts from the Fedaia Pass at an altitude of 2,057 metres. In little more than an hour and a half's walk, you reach the Pian dei Fiacconi, where the former refuge was located at an altitude of 2650 m. From here, cross in a westerly direction until reaching the Vernel glacier. Put on your crampons and climb back up the slightly crevassed glacier toward the Forcella Marmolada. Once past the terminal, a first stretch of metal cable facilitates access to the fork that divides the Marmolada from the Piccolo Vernel. Here begins the real ferrata along the west ridge, which develops along sloping slabs and dihedrals, always with a breathtaking view of Grande and Piccolo Vernel. In the final part, the route keeps close to the ridge, allowing us to look out onto the opposite slope and discover the vertiginous walls of the south side and the Val Contrin below. Having reached the summit at 3343 m, a beer at Capanna Punta Penia before tackling the descent.
