We asked our Mountime mountain guides to tell us about a trip they took together this year during their holidays, the Czech Republic. Here is Alessandro Beber with his story about the trip that some of them wanted to take...

It must have been about 15 years since Jiri Leskovjan first told me about the stunning sandstone towers of the Czech Republic, making me dream of visiting them one day. In September 2023, that day finally arrived and we set off towards Adrspach, led by Mr.Lesky himself.
After a 10-hour drive, we found ourselves catapulted into a magical forest, where thousands of rock towers and mushrooms with the strangest shapes seem to emerge from the undergrowth. Once we touched the rock, we began to become familiar with the sandstone and above all with the very strict local ethics.

Here, all the routes are rigorously opened from below, the nails on the wall are few and far apart, and it is possible to protect yourself only with textile or rubber material (so as not to damage the rock which is quite soft), therefore using the embedded knots or the most modern UFO rings.

I didn't expect such a beautiful and satisfying climb, even if the mental aspect required by the long run-outs suggests keeping a certain margin on the grade tackled. The third period proved to be even more challenging when the climbers flocked to the bar to release the accumulated tension, washing it away with rivers of beer!

After four days between Adrspach and Teplice, we moved to Dolní Zleb, on the border with eastern Germany, where long bands of rock overlook the Elbe river. Here the rock is even more beautiful, very colorful and worked by erosion, and a little more congenial for us who come from limestone.

The real ace in the hole was naturally Jirka, who started frequenting these crags in the second half of the 80s, and he knows every sector by heart, not to mention every pitch.
After a week, having to return home was a real loss, but we will do our best to return in the future! A big thank you and all my respect to Jiri Laskovjan, a true "deux ex machina" who made this trip possible.
